Off the Canvas Meeting Agenda

Off the Canvas was created as a way to teach our children that there is more to art than paintings in a museum. Art/Craft is all around us! The clothes you have on, the building you are standing in, the dish you eat from, have all evolved from art/craft.

The importance of exposing kids to art/crafts early in life if often overlooked and undervalued. An appreciation for art/craft encourages exploration, self expression, logical thinking, self-esteem, individuality, imagination and creativity. Art/Craft teaches kids to think openly, create new meaning, be more tolerant of uniqueness, and gives them the courage to take risks. Off the Canvas and Off the Canvas LIVE! showcases the creativity of our children.

Thank You for volunteering your time!

- OTC is a once a month commitment.
- You should try to complete 7 projects for the 2012/2013 school year.
- 2-3 projects should be kept by you or your teacher and stored for display at OTC Live! On May 10th 2013

Where to begin?
There are a couple of ways to plan your OTC…..
- Contact teacher, see what’s going on in the class, Projects? Themes? Lessons? OR
- Choose an Artist, Craftsperson, Performance, and Medium…..etc.
- Gather 22-25 pieces of material (see materials)
There are “roots” to any subject you choose!

EXAMPLES:
-As part of studying about math tessellations in a 2/3 class, a lesson was created to teach a class about the artist MC Escher. Using library books, the class learned about the artist drawings and the creation of optical art as well as his love for math. The class then created their own tessellation.
Materials- recycled cardboard, pencils, scrap paper, fabric and glue.

- The artist chosen was Christo; the children were shown a video of the Miami, Florida Biscayne Bay Islands
Being wrapped in pink fabric. They were taught about installation art. The project that followed was
Breaking the children into groups and allowing them to wrap a chair.
MATERIALS- misc. fabrics, paper, stings, yarns, masking tape.

Working with children ages 3–5 should be short and easy. Too much information at this age is not necessary. Montessori teaching is learning by doing.
-We talked about where we get our clothes from and were shown pictures of looms and how things are woven. The lesson concluded with each child receiving strips of paper and
yarn that they weaved through a weaving loom.
MATERIALS: scrap paper, yarn, string. Loom- hot glue gun, paint sticks (free at Home Depot) plastic mesh.

Materials
OTC Volunteers are encouraged to incorporate eco friendly supplies and concepts in their lessons and projects. This helps keep within our goal to a greener path at Beachside. Off the Canvas discourages unnecessary buying at for example: Oriental Trading. Instead, the use of recycled materials and socially responsible useable concepts are strongly encouraged. Any volunteer with extra unused supplies that can be donated would be appreciated. OTC is working on having our own Second Hand Closet up and
running. Another good source is Trash to Treasure – creative reuse center located in Ft. Lauderdale.
www.trash2treasurefl.org we have an OTC membership, Marie Grainger is our membership contact. marieschultz@me.com

- Gather supplies, be organized….. Save those 22 paper towel rolls…. Sour cream containers, bottle caps, shells….etc. Google art/craft projects from _.
- When you’re at Michael’s, ask for the 22 very small boxes they just unpacked with holiday items…they will be thrown away!
- Go to a framing shop, ask for any mat board that they plan on getting rid of, it will be all different shapes and sizes, but you can still use!
- Ask any friends in art or design world for discarded wallpaper books, architect blueprints, fabric…etc.
- Thrift Shops, Garage Sales

Resources:
OTC volunteers must contact their teachers… PLEASE develop dialogue with your teacher…. COMMUNICATION IS KEY!!!
Make a plan to email your lesson with links to your teacher. This is for
presenting various display of art and craftsmanship to class through the use of the promethean board. I know this gets sticky… maybe you or your teacher may not be technically inclined, but if you work together with your teacher this tool will be the biggest asset to teaching OTC!!

The site to save you tube videos is
www.keepvid.com

To check and see if the BMV library has any books or resources go to
Destiny.browardschools.com and type in the name of the artist, style, time period, etc.

-The document camera can be used to show pages in books. Broward county public libraries are also great and many teachers have books, so communication is key!!!

What is Off The Canvas (OTC)?
Off The Canvas is a combination of an art history and arts and crafts program. Off The Canvas seeks to cultivate a sustained awareness and interest in art by exposing children to a variety of artists and medium.
How does Off The Canvas work (OTC)?
Off The Canvas is a volunteer driven program. The goal is to have an Off The Canvas volunteer (or two) in each classroom for Pre/k -5th. Once a month, the volunteer presents a various display of arts and crafts to the class through the use of library books, posters, laptop computers and/or the promethean board. The volunteer will highlight the significant aspects of an artist or craftsperson’s style and life as well as lead discussions with students about the art or craft. In addition to the presentation, the volunteer will provide hands on art or craft projects that coincide with the presentation.
What is Off the Canvas (OTC) LIVE!
Off the Canvas LIVE! Is a fully interactive evening of everything art. Pre/k-5th will have their artwork that has been created during the school year displayed throughout the school.
